Chelyabinsk
Chelyabinsk is located on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains, on the shore of the Miass River. It was founded in 1736 as a Russian fortress on the former site of the Bashkir village. At first Chelyabinsk was famous as a place of exile for political criminals. With the construction of the Trans-Siberian railway, the city became an increasingly significant station on this vital transportation route. In the 20th century Chelyabinsk became famous as a growing industrial center, which attracted romantic youth from all over Russia who were eager to join in the city's prosperity. The inflow of workers helped Chelyabinsk to become the large industrial center that it is today. Nowadays Chelyabinsk attracts tourists and business executives alike, interested in industrial development and architecture. Visitors to the city will see examples of industrial architecture such as the first electric power plant. Historical architectural landmarks include a mosque, a synagogue, orthodox churches, and other important buildings that predate the revolution.
