Surgut is located on the middle watercourse of the Ob. Surgut was found in 1594 by the Cossack group, headed by the prince Fyodor Boryatinsky. The favourable geographical position and convenient waterways made Surgut the centre of a huge district. Surgut has gotten a new birth after the opening of oilfields in the Middle Priobje at the beginning of 60th. At present Surgut is the largest industrial and cultural centre of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. The basis of the town economy is the fuel and energy complex which includes the prospecting, oil and gas-producing, pipeline enterprises, power stations, oil-refining and gas-processing plants. Surgut is a powerful energetic center of the country. The power stations of the town are the most powerful in the world.
