Mariinsky II alongside the historic building of the Mariinsky Theatre, built in 1860, and the Concert Hall, which opened its doors in 2006, is a part of a unique theatre and concert complex. Mariinsky II is the newest addition to this complex: the grand opening took place on the 2nd of May 2013. It’s connected with the historic stage of the Mariinsky Theatre by a pedestrian bridge over the Kryukov Canal.

The total area of the building is approximately 80000 square meters, making it one of the largest theatre venues and concert halls in the world. The new theatre has 10 floors, 3 of which are located below the surface. Its auditorium designed according to the tradition of 18th and 19th-century opera houses can accommodate up to 2000 people. Mariinsky II also has 200 seats rooftop amphitheater, a third-floor lobby amphitheater, multiple rehearsal rooms for chorus, ballet, and orchestra.

The avant-garde exterior of Mariinsky II with huge glass facades and bay windows led to a heated debate. Some people believe that the new theatre spoils the pristine 19th-century architectural ensemble of St. Petersburg’s historical part. Others argue that the building has its individuality and introduces new elements and colors to the classical scenery of Theatre Square.
