Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was founded by Russian settlers in 1882 with the name "Wladimirowka". 1905-1945 it belonged to Japanese people and had the name "Toyohara". Luckily, Russia could reconquer the city during the Great Patriotic War and became again an outpost of Russia in the Far East until today. The city has a lot of historical buildings and very interesting local museums like the Regional Art Museum, the Museum of the railway equipment and books of AP Tchechov like "Island Sachalin". On the area of glory is a memorial to remember the soldiers of the Second World War. Another interesting attraction is the Cathedral of resurrection in the old Russian style. It has been consecrated in 1995. In the city centre is a bench on which Gagarin is sitting. In this area is a nice lake and a big green space with many different colours of flowers. In the city are a lot of good hotels. The four star hotel "Mega Palace Hotel" is located at the bottom of the mountains and has a restaurant with an international kitchen. The hotel "Santa Resort Hotel" has a large spa complex and a tennis court. Book a room in these hotels on the webiste www.hotels.ru.
