Monument to Peter I officially was opened on the 5th of September 1997 for the 300 years anniversary of Russian Fleet. It was designed by the outstanding sculptor Zurab Tsereteli.
The monument of Tsereteli is the highest monument in Russia and in the world. It is higher than Rodina-Mat' monument in Volgograd, Statue of Liberty in New York, Christ monument in Rio de Janeiro and every other. Also it's believed to be the heaviest one too. Sculpture with stainless framework is plated with bronze and weights nearly 2 thousand tons. The monument consists of three parts: the base, the ship and the figure of Peter the Great. All the parts were made separately. To finish the sculpture Zurab Tsereteli needed less than a year.
